As this child was being baptized the water forms the image of a Rosary! This was posted by a Ferde in the Catholic Debate Forum who got it from his wife. I'm not sure of the origin, but there you have it!

Catholics believe baptism is necessary for salvation.

“Therefore, all must be converted to Him, made known by the Church's preaching, and all must be incorporated into Him by baptism and into the Church which is His body. For Christ Himself "by stressing in express language the necessity of faith and baptism (cf. Mark 16:16; John 3:5), at the same time confirmed the necessity of the Church, into which men enter by baptism, as by a door. Therefore those men cannot be saved, who though aware that God, through Jesus Christ founded the Church as something necessary, still do not wish to enter into it, or to persevere in it." (Dogmatic constitution by Vatican II: Lumen Gentium 14) Therefore though God in ways known to Himself can lead those inculpably ignorant of the Gospel to find that faith without which it is impossible to please Him (Heb. 11:6), yet a necessity lies upon the Church (1 Cor. 9:16), and at the same time a sacred duty, to preach the Gospel. ReplyDeleteA couple things here, and I'm not sure of your position on these.
1) The Catholic Church recognizes the validity of most Protestant baptisms. Therefore, for many (not all) Protestants - they HAVE "entered through that door" of Baptism.
2) The Council of Trent teaches: "since promulgation of the Gospel, be effected except through the laver of regeneration or its desire" Trent 6.4. Some translate "desire" from the Latin word "votum" as more of a "vow" than "desire," but that "vow" would still be based in the desire to comply with the Church's (and scriptural) teaching that one must be baptized.
3) Invincible Ignorance, as you appear to be representing already, means that if one "through no fault of their own" remains outside the visible Catholic Church MAY (not WILL) be saved.
4) As you did state, it IS the responsibility of the Church to teach the necessity of Baptism and not emphasize that God MIGHT through His own wisdom elect that one who is invincibly ignorant to salvation. In the end, GOD is the Judge and HE will decide.
