SSPX May Split

The superior general of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) said in an interview that there may be a split within the society if it reconciles with the Holy See.
“There are some discrepancies in the society,” said Bishop Bernard Fellay. “I cannot exclude that there might be a split.”
“The thing is not yet done,” he continued. “We need some reasonable understanding that the proposed structure and conditions are workable. We are not going to do suicide there, that’s very clear.”
Bishop Fellay’s comments come amid widespread speculation that Pope Benedict XVI will soon approve a canonical agreement regularizing the status of the SSPX, thus ending a split that began in the 1970s and peaked in 1988 when the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, then the leader of the SSPX, was excommunicated after ordaining four bishops in defiance of orders from Blessed John Paul II. In 2009, Pope Benedict lifted the excommunications (which also applied to the SSPX bishops), but the traditionalist prelates remain suspended from ministry.
“Personally, I would have wished to wait for some more time to see things clearer, but once again it really appears that the Holy Father wants it to happen now,” Bishop Fellay added. “The Pope says that ... the [Second Vatican] Council must be put within the great tradition of the Church, must be understood in accordance with it.”
“These are statements we fully agree with, totally, absolutely,” Bishop Fellay said. “The problem might be in the application, that is: is what happens really in coherence or in harmony with tradition?”

I say, let them split!  If they are closet sede vacantists then they should stop pretending and let THEIR split be complete!  The rest of SSPX which desires communion with Rome should not be held hostage to those who aren't really "of the fold" anyway.  Comments?

BEFORE MEETING THE THREE SSPX BISHOPS CDF NEEDS TO BE ASKED TO ENDORSE AD GENTES 7 WITH RESPECT TO JUDAISM AND CLARIFY THAT INVINCIBLE IGNORANCE (LG 16) IS NOT AN EXPLICIT,KNOWN EXCEPTION TO AG 7 AND THE DOGMA EXTRA ECCLESIAM NULLA SALUS

What is the moral authority of the pope and cardinals over the three SSPX bishops when they are in public heresy?

If the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith(CDF) cannot affirm Vatican Council II (AG 7) with respect to Jews and ecumenism, and if they do not admit that invincible ignorance and being saved with a good conscience (LG 16) are not explicit exceptions, then how can they expect the Society of St. Pius X bishops to accept Vatican Council II, and that too, their version of Vatican Council II with no supportive texts from the Council?

The SSPX bishops could insist that the CDF relationship with the Jews should be based on Vatican Council II and that they should be able to cite texts from Vatican Council which says Jews do not have to convert in the present times or that Jews are the Chosen People of God today. There is no such text in Nostra Aetate or Lumen Gentium with reference to the Jews.

Nostra Aetate also does not say that for good relations with the Jews Catholics must deny the Faith.

Pope Benedict XVI has rejected Vatican Council II (AG 7) in Light of the World p.107: Also Cardinals Bertone, Bagnasco, Koch and Ladaria. Yet three SSPX bishops could be excommunicated for only ‘saying’ they reject the Council

  2. The most troublesome of the other bishops is Williamson. He has always been a loose cannon. What troubles me about the man is that he places his ideas about revisionist history above church unity. I, myself, have some doubts about the offical lines concerning WWI and WWII, but the Church comes first. He had no business allowing himself to be interviewed about WWII history and his interpetation of it. He's, to the best of my knowledge, not a trained historian in WWII history, so he should keep his mouth shut about things he's not an expert in. By appearing in his clerical garb on that tv program, he dragged the SSPX and the Church into an unnessasary controversy that hurt the Church by giving it's enemies ammunition (the anti-semite canard) to use against it. If there is a split, you can bet ol' Willie will be the big splinter at the head of it.
